Valentine’s Weekend in DC

This past weekend was the first Valentine’s Day for Chris and I. I love Valentine’s Day, but not everyone feels the same way so I was pleasantly surprised when he was on board to get away for the weekend and spend some uninterrupted time together. He had been gone covering the New Hampshire Primary and we went almost a week apart so we were both very much looking forward to the weekend!

We opted to do an Airbnb in Washington DC. DC is only 45-60 minutes away from us in Baltimore so we left after work on Friday. Our place was located a mile away from Dupont Circle and about a mile away from Adams Morgan. We LOVED this location. The place was small, but we didn’t need a lot of space for a quick trip and the free parking on the street was AMAZING. You know you’ve been in the city for a while when free and easy to find parking makes you giddy with joy.

When we arrived on Friday night we were exhausted from a busy week and opted to stay in and watch some New Girl. Chris ordered wine via Drizly and it took me three hours to figure out that OrderUp doesn’t exist in that neighborhood. I had to download Grubhub and after a comedy of errors our food arrived….at 12:01am. By the time it arrived I was exhausted and literally ate a handful of French fries and crashed for the night.

We woke up on Saturday bright eyed and bushy tailed and went to my favorite brunch spot in Washington DC- Ted’s Bulletin. The restaurant is set up to look like it’s from the 60’s with rabbit ears on all the tv’s and a newspaper menu. We started with handmade donuts and poptarts before digging into our breakfast.

Once our bellies were full we started the trek to DC Brau which was my little Valentine’s Day treat for Chris. He LOVES beer and not in a “let’s get hammered on a Friday night” kinda way. He actively seeks out beer that he hasn’t tasted before to experience a new flavor. I had never been on a brewery tour and really didn’t know how beer was made so it was a win-win for both of us. The tour was ok- we couldn’t really hear the tour guide. Partially because our group was about 40 people deep but also because she really didn’t seem to care if we could hear her or not.

I really liked the brewery because of the artwork. There were murals and graffiti style art all over the place and I was the girl snapping pics the entire time.

After a few flights of samples we headed back to our house to get ready for a delicious dinner.

Founding Farmers is another one of my favorites in Washington and the wait is always so insanely long so I made reservations over a month ago. I’ll be sharing the details of our meal in a blog post next week but I can’t stop thinking about the cornbread we devoured.

My old roommate Carissa moved to DC a year or two ago and I haven’t been able to see her as much as I’d like so we met up with her and her new boyfriend at a restaurant a few streets away from dinner. We had one too many and our “quick drink” at 9pm turned into an Uber ride home around 1:30am. It was totally worth it to see her, meet Rob, and introduce Chris to another one of my friends.

Sunday morning was a little slower of a start especially after the evening we had! I wanted a bagel badly and had heard really good things about the bagel place close to us. After an everything bagel from Bethesda Bagels, I was set to tackle the day!

Our Valentine’s Day dinner reservation was the only thing planned for the day so we wandered down to the mall where we meandered thru the Sculpture Garden, took way too many pictures, and fought the cold winter wind.

We also checked out a few of the exhibits at the Natural History Museum which happens to be my favorite.

Before we knew it, it was time to head to dinner, which was a surprise to me from Chris. When we decided to do this weekend away he wanted to handle Valentine’s Day dinner and I was excited to see where we were eating!

Our reservations were at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse and I am not exaggerating when I say that it was hands down the best meal I’ve ever eaten. Fried calamari, a perfectly cooked filet mignon, twice baked mashed potatoes and shaved brussel sprouts with bacon. All the heart eyes. The boy did good!

We had such a great weekend and I’m so thankful for the time together with such busy weeks and months ahead of us. It’s pretty fun doing life with this guy and it doesn’t hurt that he’s so easy on the eyes.

Have you been to DC?
