The Story of Us

It was a typical Friday night in August. Byrd, my roommate and best friend, was getting ready to meet up with friends in Fells Point and invited me along.

I got ready quickly in black lace shorts and a white top. I felt pretty but not over done. I wasn’t trying to impress anyone, I just wanted to feel good about myself and have a good night.

I was meeting everyone at Greene Turtle in Fells Point to watch the pre-season Ravens game. When I got there I said a round of hellos and realized I didn’t know one of the guys there. I thought he was cute. He knew the rest of the group and cracked jokes like he’d known everyone forever. No one introduced us and some time started to pass making it awkward to bring up the fact that we had never met.

Eventually everyone went outside to get some air and as we stood in a circle chatting he made eye contact, stuck out his hand and said, “Hi! I’m Chris”. The group fell silent and then burst into laughter. How had we never met?! The group was floored. This wasn’t my first time hanging out with them and it definitely wasn’t his. Somehow we had missed each other every single time.

I kept catching his eye the rest of the evening and we found ourselves standing together at the bar. Without us noticing, the rest of the group slowly crept outside leaving Chris and I alone in the bar. Byrd loves telling this part of the story. She talks about how my body language changed and my eyes lit up. She noted that I hadn’t looked this happy in a while.

I can’t remember the words he said, but I remember how happy I felt. I don’t remember the jokes he cracked, but I remember laughing, and not just a flirtatious laugh, a belly laugh. I remember wanting the conversation to continue and I remember telling myself to not get attached. It had been a bad couple of months and I didn’t know if I could let myself get excited about someone again.

But life doesn’t always listen to what we want and sometimes we find the thing we need most standing right in front of us.

Happy 6 months Chris. It feels like forever, in the best possible way.
